Marine Industry Facts

Boating is hot right now – and so are career opportunities. Whether you’re interested in working at a marina, a boat yard, a yacht club, or a park, the numbers show this is a field with a future:

  • The number of marine repair technicians in the United States is expected to increase by 15 percent between 2004-2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That translates into real jobs for those with the marine technician skills taught at Marine Mechanics Institute!
  • And these are jobs that aren’t going to get outsourced to a foreign country: People can’t send their marine vehicles out of the country for repair. So, the jobs stay here, too.
  • Nearly one-third of adults went boating in 2006, up 1.8% from the previous year.
  • Over the next decade, more people will be entering the 40-and-older group – the group that buys most of the marine crafts!

What does it take to be a Marine Technician?

It’s simple. There’s the “mechanic” of yesterday and today’s marine “technician.”

Yesterday’s marine mechanic:

  • Learned on the job
  • Required very little technical knowledge
  • Strictly mechanical repair
  • Had little emphasis on professionalism
  • Was typically underpaid with little advancement opportunity
  • Easily replaced with high turnover rates

Today’s marine technician:

  • Professionally trained in a technical school
  • High-tech skills, safety-focused
  • Knows the ‘why’s’ and science of mechanics
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Great pay, advancement opportunities, and lifestyle
  • Respected, ‘in demand’ and indispensable
